FANTASY ART – Ferryhill Ladder Centre

Brief History:

The LADDER Centre is a community building brought about by the community for the community. The Centre was opened in December 2002 after 5 years of fund raising. The Centre is a very busy place and consists of two semi-detached houses on the Lakes Estate in Ferryhill.

They offer courses and employability access to computers and help with CV’s, Universal Job Match, information, advice and guidance, children and youth sessions.

Helen – participant:

Helen has 3 children who she takes care of on her own; one of them has cerebral palsy. Helen tries to keep involved in activities at her local community centre once or twice a week while the children are at school because she recognises the importance of making time for herself. She heard about the Fantasy Art course being offered by Jack `drum on behalf of Colour Your Life through her involvement with the Women’s group in the same centre. She enjoys colouring but has no experience creating art or painting, and so came to the group as somewhat of a novice.

Helen has found the sessions incredibly calming and stress free, saying “… it’s just nice to have something to focus on, something that’s just for me.” When asked she would say she that she is still not a confident painter, however her tutor disagrees, he said “… she’s really come on and has produced some lovely work, she’s a lot more open than at the start.”

Helen says she’s learned, “… not just painting, but all the different techniques. We painted sky scenes and learned how to use blended colours to create an interesting skyline, using acrylics to make texture, and using interesting techniques with pens and water. I’ve also had to use my imagination and dream up these fantasy images like floating planets and dragons. I just get lost in it, I love it.”

Helen and the rest of the group are sad to see the end of the sessions, and would most definitely be interested in an art course again in the future.
Comments:

“I’ve come along to this group and I’ve made new friends.”

“It has got me out of the house and that’s important. I’ve really enjoyed the course and the tutor has been very good.”
